At some point, hopefully soon, all of this will be behind us. We will all be back at work and carrying on as normal. It may not be soon however, and this phase may well continue for another 6-12 months. Perhaps longer. Personally, I sincerely hope that it’s soon and that everybody ends up in a much better place.
What will the new normal be however? I think what we definitely do know is that things will never be exactly the same again. Period.
So what then, for when we think back to today from that distant utopia, will we be reminiscing and asking ourselves as well as others “what did you and I spend our time doing during the Covid-19 pandemic?”
There’s a few different answers and scenarios that will emerge:-
- “I carried on working to the best of my ability and showed my colleagues and bosses that I could still work despite the difficult times we faced. I might not have been able to accomplish the same level of work, but I turned up for work EVERY SINGLE DAY.”
- “I couldn’t do anything job-wise, so I spent my time transforming my body/garden/house into the perfect version of itself. I may not have been working but I HAD FOCUS.”
- “I had a horrible time. I was depressed and didn’t know for how much longer I would have my job. I couldn’t focus on anything and there were some very dark times while I was stuck at home.”
- “I spent my time developing a new skill or set of skills to help me open new pathways to success. I knew that things would never be that same and I dedicated my time and energy to thinking about how to embrace the new career landscape that emerged from this pandemic.”
That last statement is clearly what we would all like to be saying at the future dinner party of our dreams, as we stand back and gaze upon the wealth we have accumulated due to the wise decisions we made.
The point is, that we all have some degree of freedom and time available to do this. Not just now, but at any time during our working lives. However, now seems to be as good a time as any to embrace the new normal and make a start on pursuing that dream we’ve always had.
